AMES — Woodward-Granger found themselves the smallest school, by far, playing at the Ames Country Club Saturday in the Gilbert (boys) Invitational. To make matters even more challenging, several of the teams in action were among the better schools Central Iowa.

Nevada was only a combined 25 strokes over par when their four lowest cards produced a winning total of 305, with host Gilbert the runner-up with a 315. Ballard nipped Boone, 325-327, for third place, with DC-G (334), Bondurant-Farrar (343) and W-G (375) completing the field.

Gilbert’s Tommy Doyle fired a four-under par 66 to snare individual honors, with Ballard’s Noah Hartman second at 71 while Boone’s Taylor Wauhob placed third at 74 after winning a tiebreaker with Nevada’s Dylan Sporrer (also 74).

Nick Brummond led W-G with his 44-41–85. Coby Peters posted a 43-48–91, Trey Lettow a 47-50–97 and Hunter Pierce a 51-51–102 to complete the Hawk scoring.

Derek Shanno (37-44–81) had the low round for DC-G, with Jayden Brady (39-43–82) pacing B-F.

A junior varsity meet was held at the same time, with all schools save Nevada having four JV players on hand to create a second team score.

Honors for the JV teams went to Ballard at 377, with Boone second at 379. DC-G had a 385, Gilbert a 422, B-F a 436 and W-G a 451.

Max Helbling (55-50-105), Jimmy Guzzi (53-59–112), Matt Buch (51-62–113) and Nick Buch (55-66–121) produced the scores for the W-G JV.
