WOODWARD — The Woodward-Granger boys basketball team made a special trip Thursday, with the Woodward Public Library their destination.

The Hawks had hosted Mormon Trail Nov. 22 for an Iowa Hall of Pride Scrimmage, a preseason contest which is officiated and conducted exactly as a regular season game would be.

One of the conditions for receiving state approval to host a Pride Scrimmage is that the home team must choose a local non-profit organization or cause to support, including donating time to the effort.

The Hawks chose the Woodward Public Library to support. They donated a wreath to the silent auction held at the library and passed out flyers promoting the Christmas tree lighting and celebration, which was held Saturday.

A portion of the admission to the game is given to the Iowa Hall of Pride, with the hosts donating their share to the chosen recipient.

That meant a big smile from Library Director Myrna Griffith, who was presented a check for $388 Thursday afternoon.

Seniors Bryce Achenbach, Alex Bice, Kaya Bowlsby, Keith Braunschweig, Nick Buch, Jack Grell, Reese Jamison and Pacey Moats were on hand to make the donation. The team is coached by Brent Achenbach.

The W-G boys will be joined by the Hawk girls in hosting West Central Valley tonight in a WCAC set beginning at 6 p.m. The Hawk boys will then play a special contest against Central Decatur Saturday at the Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. The junior varsity game will begin at 1 p.m. with the varsity contest to follow.
