Hawks hit the mats at Winterset Saturday

WINTERSET — Seven Woodward-Granger wrestlers finished in the top half of their weight class brackets at the 17-team Gary Christensen Invitational Saturday.

Osage slipped past Interstate-35, 188.5-184.5, for the top team honors, with Van Meter/Earlham a close third at 175.5 while W-G placed sixth with 115 team points.

Junior Cody Fisher again led the way, improving to 22-0 on the season while finishing 4-0 to easily claim individual honors at 220 pounds. Fisher recorded three pins and won once by decision in dominating his bracket.

The strong season of heavyweight Tyler Lawrenson (21-2) continued as he placed second with a 3-1 mark. The Hawk big man won twice by fall and once in the second tiebreaker.

Cale Pritchett (19-4) was 2-1 with a pin and a decision to place second at 170 pounds and cap the three Hawk finalists.

Finishing fifth were both Gabe Yingst (160 pounds) and Colt Palmer (132). The former was 3-2 with a trio of pins while the later was 2-2 with a decision and a pin.

Aidan Honkomp was 3-1 with two pins and a decision in placing seventh at 113, with Dustin Harney 3-2 with a decision, a pin and a win by medical forfeit in placing eighth (Harney had to medically forfeit his final match) at 145.

Jon McKeever was 1-2 at 152, with Matthew White (120), Dilynn Lewiston (126) and Jay Dorenkamp (138) winless in two matches while Kade Polich (182) dropped his trio of matches.

The Hawks left both the 106 and 195-pound weight classes open at the invite.

W-G will be joined by Indianola for a triangular at Pella Thursday and will then compete in the Perry Invitational Saturday.
