A medical emergency at the boys basketball practice Wednesday has resulted in a W-G student being Life-flighted to a Des Moines hospital.

WOODWARD — The Woodward-Granger softball team rallied twice from three runs down to score a 7-4 win over Des Moines Christian in WCC action Thursday.

W-G (2-0, 2-0) trailed, 3-0, before plating a run in the bottom of the fourth. DMC answered with a tally of their own in the fifth to push the lead back to three runs, at 4-1, but the Hawk offense woke up in the bottom of the stanza with five runs to grab a 6-4 lead. An insurance run in the bottom of the sixth accounted for the final score.

“We hit the ball pretty well again tonight,” W-G head coach Noah Bean said. “I also liked how well we ran the bases. We were very aggressive and tried to put them (DMC) in some bad situations and it worked.”

The Hawks had 12 hits in the game, and while all of them were singles, the speed and aggressiveness of the runners that reached played havoc on the defense and allowed for continued rallies.

Annie Webb was 3-for-3 with two RBIs, with Meagan Bandstra’s two-run base hit in the fifth helping to break the game open. Kendra Husmann was also 3-for-3 and scored two runs for the hosts.

“We had production from the entire lineup, including our eight and nine batters,” Bean said. “It was a good all-around effort.”

Riley Jamison yielded four runs (two earned) on eight hits and a walk. She walked eight and kept the Lions from mounting a sustained attack.

Maddie Wagner’s solo home run in the fifth for DMC was the only extra-base hit in the game.

W-G plays Wayne (Corydon) at 12 p.m., Pella at 2 p.m. and Centerville at 4 p.m. Saturday in the Centerville Tournament in their next trip onto the diamond. They will then host Southwest Valley Monday before visiting Van Meter Tuesday.
