The National Weather Service office in Des Moines has issued a heat advisory beginning Wednesday at noon and continuing until 8 p.m.

Heat index values from 100 to 105 are expected over large portions of central, north-central and eastern Iowa. The hot temperatures and high humidity might cause heat
illnesses to occur, the NWS said.

People in the heat-advisory area are advised to drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun and check up on relatives and neighbors. Young
children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances.

People who work outdoors or spend time outside should take extra precautions, the NWS said. When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing when possible.

Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.  To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments.

Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location and call 911.
