High winds fell tree on Fifth Street

Perry Police Officer Josh Moore worked to clear a fallen tree in the 1300 block of Fifth Street in Perry Wednesday night shortly before 10 p.m.

A tree was brought down by high winds shortly before 10 p.m. Wednesday in the 1300 block of Fifth Street near St. Patrick’s School in Perry.

Perry Police Officer Josh Moore was first on the scene, and he removed parts of the tree while waiting for assistance from the Perry Public Works Department.

A High Wind Warning issued by the National Weather Service remains in effect until 6 a.m. Thursday, and a Wind Advisory remains in effect from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday.

The National Weather Service forecasts the strongest winds will occur over over western and northern Iowa and into central Iowa tonight and remain quite strong through Thursday. The strongest wind on Thursday will occur in the morning.

Winds tonight are expected to be sustained at 35 to 40 mph, with gusts approaching 60 mph. Thursday’s winds will diminish some to 30 to 35 mph, with gusts around 45 mph.

Travelers are advised to use caution, especially those in high-profile vehicles on north-south roads. Loose objects will also be blown around. The weather service advises extra caution.
