Downtown Perry was haunted by several hundred costumed treat seekers and their escorts Friday, with most of the merrymakers wearing masks and social distancing in order to mitigate the further community spread of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19.

The annual holiday event, sponsored by the Perry Chamber of Commerce, brings small business owners and others to the three blocks of Second Street to greet the Trick or Treaters with candy and small gifts, some delivered remotely for public health’s sake, such as Raccoon Valley Bank’s treats, attached to the bank’s front window.

The celebration of Halloween continues Friday from 6-8 p.m. with community-wide Trick or Treating.
