Husband arrested in Ottumwa woman’s ‘foul play’ death

Gregory Allen Showalter, 61, of Ottumwa was arrested Tuesday on charges of first-degree murder and felon in possession of a firearm in the death of his wife, Helen Elizabeth Showalter.

OTTUMWA, Iowa — The husband of an Ottumwa woman whose lifeless body was found Sunday afternoon in the Des Moines River in rural Wapello County turned himself in to police Tuesday in connection with his wife’s death.

Gregory Allen Showalter, 61, of 333 Evergreen St., Ottumwa, was charged with first-degree murder and felon in possession of a firearm.

Helen Elizabeth Showalter, 60, was reported missing Saturday by her family.

A statement issued Tuesday by the Ottumwa Police Department said that “preliminary investigation” of Helen Showalter’s death show that she died as a “the result of foul play.”

The investigation is conducted by the Wapello County Sheriff’s office, Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation and the Ottumwa Police Department.

*A criminal charge is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
