Star Love, Brian Alvarenga, Rashon Ivory, Abbi Martelli and McKenna Iles hold their boat, the Titanic Too, which did not strike a berg and won the iJAG Boat Float competition at the MCB pool last week.

Perry iJAG students spent two days last week hoping their hand-made constructions would safely navigate the waters of the McCreary Community Building pool as part of the “Boat Float” competition.

Students were broken into nine teams, each of which was 50 square feet of cardboard, three trash bags, and 60 feet of duct tape to design, and build, their best sea — err, pool — worthy craft.

Teams were given one block of time to test forces and create a prototype and were then awarded two blocks in which to construct their boat.

The criteria for success were simple: The boat must pass the 25-meter length of the pool and keep the captain dry. Teams were also judged on their communication skills, how well they worked together and their problem-solving skills.

Five of the nine boats successfully completed the trans-pool trek, with the remaining four sending their captains to a watery embarrassment.

Captain Star Love skillfully navigated the “Titanic II” to victory, making the iceberg-free journey in 58 seconds. Teammates included Brian Alvarenga, McKenna Iles, Rashon Ivory and Abbi Martelli.

Tina Lutterman is the junior/senior class iJAG Education Specialist for Perry.
