Illinoisans taken with 25 pounds of cocaine on interstate

Justin Russell Shannon Newcomb, 38, of 305 Connor Ave., Lockport, Illinois, and Jennifer Marie Johnson, 39, of 305 Connor Ave., Lockport, Illinois, were each arrested Monday on charges of two counts of controlled substance violation, two counts of failure to affix drug stamp, keeping premises or a vehicle for controlled substance violation and first-offense possession of a controlled substance-marijuana.

An Illinois pair were arrested Monday night after they were found traveling eastward on the interstate with 25 pounds of cocaine as well as fentanyl and marijuana.

Justin Russell Shannon Newcomb, 38, of 305 Connor Ave., Lockport, Illinois, was charged with two counts of controlled substance violation, two counts of failure to affix drug stamp, keeping premises or a vehicle for controlled substance violation and first-offense possession of a controlled substance-marijuana.

Jennifer Marie Johnson, 39, of 305 Connor Ave., Lockport, Illinois, was charged with two counts of controlled substance violation, two counts of failure to affix drug stamp, keeping premises or a vehicle for controlled substance violation and first-offense possession of a controlled substance-marijuana.

The incident began about 7 p.m. Monday near the 104 mile marker of eastbound U.S. Interstate 80, where an Iowa State Patrol Trooper stopped a 2019 Toyota Camry with Illinois plates “for multiple violations,” according to court records.

The trooper allegedly “gained reasonable articulable suspicion to believe the occupants were engaged in criminal activity, and the front seat passenger admitted they were in possession of marijuana,” according to court records.

A probable-cause search of the vehicle disclosed “43 grams of raw marijuana, 24.6 pounds of suspected cocaine and a package of suspected fentanyl pills over 10 dosage units,” according to court records.

Newcomb is held in the Dallas County Jail on a $48,000 cash or surety bond. He is scheduled for a preliminary hearing March 12 in Dallas County District Court.
