An Indianola man was arrested Sunday night for allegedly assaulting his brother in West Des Moines.

Nicholas David Bradshaw, 37, of 703 E. Euclid Ave., Indianola, was charged with first-offense domestic abuse assault-bodily injury or mental illness and first-offense possession of a controlled substance.

The incident began about 8 p.m. Sunday in the 6400 block of Vista Drive in West Des Moines, where Bradshaw and his brother “got into an argument,” according to court records.

When the victim attempted to leave the apartment, Bradshaw allegedly “grabbed him from behind, placing him into a bear-hug/choke-hold,” according to court records.

Officers of the West Des Moines Police Department observed on the victim “an injury in the form of a scratch across his arm and chest,” according to court records.

In the process of detaining Bradshaw, the officers allegedly “located an unmarked prescription bottle, containing pills, in his right side shorts pocket,” according to court records. Bradshaw told the officers that “the pills were Xanax,” and he “admitted he did not have a prescription for them.”

Bradshaw was held in the Dallas County Jail on a $1,000 cash or surety bond. He is scheduled for a preliminary hearing June 30 in Dallas County District Court.
