Construction progress on the Iowa Highway 141 Urban Loop — the flyover ramp and bridge connecting the northbound U.S. Interstate 35/80 and the westbound Iowa Highway 141 — will force the closure of the interchange off-ramps beginning Friday, Oct. 11 and continuing until Monday, Oct. 21, according to the Iowa Department of Transportation.

All exit ramps from the interstate to the highway will be closed during the construction period, and westbound Iowa Highway 141 will be reduced to one lane between the interstate and 37th Street in Grimes.

The DOT predicts traffic congestion in the Grimes and Urbandale area will be severe during construction, and alternative routes from the interstate to northern Polk and Dallas counties are recommended.

Only the interstate off-ramps will be closed. On-ramps from Highway 141 to the interstate will remain open.

The DOT said the new Urban Loop will greatly improve traffic flow in the northwest metro area. Improvements also include additional lanes on U.S. Interstate 35/80 between Douglas Avenue and 100th Street.
