Intoxicated man arrested for assaulting paramedic, hospital security

Bradley Kramer, 57, of West Des Moines was arrested Christmas Day on a Polk County charge of assault on peace officers and others and a Dallas County charge of assault on persons in certain occupations-bodily injury.

An intoxicated West Des Moines man was arrested early Christmas morning after he allegedly assaulted a West Des Moines EMS paramedic and a Methodist West Hospital security staff member.

Bradley Dean Kramer, 57, of 225 Prairie View Dr., #7221, West Des Moines, was charged with assault on persons in certain occupations-bodily injury and assault on peace officers and others.

According to court records, the incident began about 12:15 a.m. Wednesday when officers of the West Des Moines Police Department responded to a reported overdose in the vicinity of Kramer’s residence. The officers located Kramer “accompanied by a female, who advised he had been drinking heavily throughout the evening.”

Kramer admitted he had been drinking, and he presented bloodshot, watery eyes, slurred speech and the odor of alcohol, according to records.

The West Des Moines EMS was paged to provide medical attention to Kramer and while he was bring treated, Kramer allegedly “went from a calm composure to striking” a paramedic “in the face” and “after striking her, the defendant accosted all first responders on scene with profanity,” according to court records.

Kramer was placed in custody for the assault. Due to his high level of intoxication, he was transported to Methodist West Hospital for evaluation before his transport to Polk County Jail.

At the hospital, Kramer allegedly “continued his behavior and assaulted a security staff member” by “striking him in the face with his cuffed wrists.” The security guard suffered a nosebleed in the alleged assault.

The first alleged assault took place in Polk County, and the second took place in Dallas County. Kramer was transported and booked into the Polk County Jail after he was medically cleared at Methodist West Hospital and later transported and booked into the Dallas County Jail on a detainer request by Dallas County.

Kramer posted a $2,000 cash-only bond in Polk County and is scheduled for a preliminary hearing Jan. 3 in Polk County District Court. He posted a $2,000 cash-surety bond in Dallas County and is scheduled for a preliminary hearing Jan. 8 in Dallas County District Court.

Kramer was convicted of interference with official acts in 2007 in Polk County.
