Ivan Winger, 83, of Perry passed away Friday, May 21, 2021, at the Perry Lutheran Homes Eden Acres Campus in Perry, Iowa.

Memorial services will be held Thursday, May 27 at 10 a.m. at the Mount Olivet Lutheran Church in Perry. Burial will be at the Violet Hill Cemetery in Perry. Memorials will be given to Perry Public Library and may be left at the Carris Family Funeral Home and Cremation Care. Online condolences may be left at www.carrisfuneralhome.com.

Ivan Russell Winger was born March 15, 1938, in Coin, Iowa, to Paul A. and Alma (Vogel) Winger.

He attended Roosevelt Elementary School and Perry High School. Following graduation, he attended Mankato State, graduating with a bachelor’s degree.

Ivan served his country in the U.S. Air Force from May 31, 1956, to May 30, 1962.

He was united in marriage to Lorraine Frances Johannessen in Duluth, Minnesota, Dec. 28, 1960.

Ivan taught American history at the University of Wisconsin Mankato State Branch and the University of Kansas before moving back to Perry, where he began farming.

He was a member of the Mount Olivet Lutheran Church.

He served on the Perry Public Library board, Mount Olivet Lutheran Church board and played with the Friday Night Pickers Blue Grass Band.

Ivan enjoyed playing and listening to music, reading, woodworking and drawing cartoons. For a number of years, he was the Sunday morning D.J. at KDLS radio.

In death he rejoins his wife, Lorraine; and parents, Paul and Alma Winger.

Left to cherish Ivan’s memory are his son, Eric (Melissa) Winger of Tigard, Oregon; grandchildren, Zachary, Tessa and Hayle Winger; and sister, Martha Winger, Perry.
