The city of Jamaica is under a boil order after water well switches on the city’s water tower failed Monday.

The Jamaica Public Works Department advises residents to boil water for at least one minute at a rolling boil prior to drinking, brushing teeth, cooking or making ice.

City officials said the boil border will be lifted after bacteriological sampling is conducted to ensure that the water is again safe to drink, possibly as soon as Wednesday.

Jamaica Mayor LaDonna Kennedy said Monday the Perry Fareway Store donated bottled water for the use of residents. She said the donated water is available at the Jamaica Public Library.
