James Joseph Hartz Jr. was born Sept. 24, 1934, in St. Louis and died Aug. 14, 2016, in Englewood, Fla.
James grew up in St. Louis and served four years in the U.S. Marine Corps.
He worked 33 years for Southwestern Bell Telephone and was an entrepreneur, starting Hartz Interior Floors in 1965 and operating it until until 2013.
James was a dedicated and loyal member of the Roman Catholic Church. A memorial Catholic Mass, followed by a Celebration of Life gathering, will be held in his honor the weekend of Nov. 19, 2016.
His wife of 51 years, Jacqueline Hartz, preceded him in death in May 2013. His son Mark Hartz preceded him in death in May 1991.
James is survived by his two children, Kerri Duncan and Jay Hartz; seven grandchildren; and one great grandchild.
