James Roger Hicks, beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully Dec. 26, 2024, in Madrid, Iowa. He was born Jan. 14, 1944, in Audubon, Iowa, to Howard and Gladys (Jorgensen) Hicks.
Funeral services will be Friday, Jan. 3 at 11 a.m. at the Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home in Perry, with burial following at Violet Hill Cemetery in Perry, Iowa.
Growing up in the Perry area, James (Jim) graduated from Perry High School before marrying the love of his life, Joan Anderson, in Minburn, Iowa, on June 1, 1963. Together they built a beautiful life filled with love, laughter and cherished memories.
Jim dedicated 31 years of his career as a welder at Weise Industries, where he earned the respect of his colleagues and contributed to his community.
Alongside his son Roger, he ran a successful lawnmowing business for many years.
An avid craftsman, Jim was known for his exceptional talent in remodeling the houses they lived in, creating spaces that his family and friends cherished. Before flipping houses was a thing, Jim and Joan would sell the houses to start his next remodel.
His passion for the outdoors was matched only by his love for woodworking. Jim crafted many items that continue to bring joy to his family.
He was a devoted supporter and coach of his children’s sports activities, fostering their love for teamwork and competition.
Jim was known for being an avid card player with family and friends.
A lifelong fan of country music, Jim and his family made many memorable trips to Branson, Missouri, where they enjoyed the music and created lasting memories.
In his retirement, he found joy in riding his four-wheeler and tinkering in the garage, always ready for the next project.
Above all, Jim adored his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His love for family was the cornerstone of his life, and his legacy will live on in the hearts of those who knew him.
Jim is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Joan; children, Annette (Albert) Adams and Roger (Kristie) Hicks; grandchildren, Sir (Amber) Adams, Cory (Christi) Adams, Brannon (Trinity) Adams, Kristin Wolfe and Nathan Hicks; great-grandchildren, Abigail Adams, Siranna Adams, Kira Adams, Anastasia Adams, Seraphina Adams, Lilianna Adams, Tommy Adams, Izzy Adams, Israel Adams, Ruthie Adams and one on the way; brothers, Bruce Hicks and Barry (Patty) Hicks; sisters, Shirley Anderson, Iola Bainter and Carolyn Wachter; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Lester Hicks; sisters, Brenda Brown and Winona (Nonie) Roberts; brother-in-law, Harold Anderson; and sister-in-law, Rose Chambers.
