It started with the major colleges and has spread from there, with professional sports teams now heavily invested.

The ‘it’ in question are what the social media world refers to as “hype videos.” The video clips, ranging anywhere from 30 seconds to three or four minutes, often feature quickly-changing scenes and a modern music soundtrack.

On Wednesday the Perry girls basketball team become one of the first of a growing number of prep programs to promote themselves in the trendiest way.

Shot over a two-hour stretch and featuring six returning players and new head coach Chris Morrow, the video encourages fans to come out and support the team, noting the season will open Nov. 17 with a home contest against Des Moines North. Players are seen wearing their new warm-ups in the video.

The video was recorded and edited and music chosen and selected, by senior Skylar Cunningham. Future videos of the Jayettes are expected, and has already caused a sensation in the halls of PHS, with other Perry varsity team eager to add their own voices.
