Perry junior Kacy Nevitt hammers one of her 11 kills in a Jayette win over Fort Dodge St. Edmond Thursday.

The wait was a long one last season.

The Perry volleyball team started 0-16 before finding their first win in 2018, and were 1-21 (5-46 in games played) before winning their second match, the moment coming Sept. 24.

The 2019 version of the Jayettes — nearly identical to the young team that stood on the court last autumn — decided Thursday they would rather not endure the same trial this year.

Perry dispatched Fort Dodge St. Edmond, 2-0, and then rallied to knock off Greene County, 2-1, in a triangular Thursday at the PHS gym to open the year 2-0.

“The girls did a great job staying in the system all night,” head coach John Fulton said. “That was some of the best passing we have had in quite some time and it makes the work for our setter and the front row that much easier.”

The Jayettes were 25-22, 25-18 victors over the Gaels before dropping the first game to the Rams, 25-14. The hosts responded with wins of 25-17 and 15-12 to claim a pair of match victories. FDSE topped Greene County, 2-1, in the other match at the triangular.

Perry had a 16-9 lead in the first game of the season, only to see FDSE rally to tie the score. A determined Jayette squad rallied to snatch the win, then cemented the victory by holding off another Gaels rally in game two.

Kacy Nevitt was the fulcrum. Perry scored repeatedly with the junior in the front row, with FDSE finding much more success with Nevitt away from the net.

“Kacy was definitely a game-changer and she can impact the games not only offensively but defensively as well,” Fulton acknowledged. “Magley Orellana and our back row did a great job of getting it to Quinn (Whiton) in order set up our kills.”

Perry could have fallen to old doubts when Greene County rolled to an 11-point win in the first game between the rivals, but a resolute response tied the match before helping the Jayettes seal the overall win.

Nevitt finished with 28 total kills, 11 digs and five blocks, with Jasmine Shriver adding seven kills 13 digs and a block. Whiton had 39 assists, 12 digs and three kills, with Orellana (the libero player) making 17 digs while adding three assists. Ashley Cerna had five kills and eight digs, Peyton Tunink three kills and a block and Jayna Kenney four blocks, three digs and an assist.

Perry served well, with Shriver 20-of-20 with six aces and Nevitt 17-of-18 with four aces. Kenney was 18-19-1 behind the line, Orellana 10-10-1 and Cerna 17-23-5 with Whiton 11-of-11.

Perry visits Boone Tuesday before hosting ADM Sept. 10.
