The Perry girls swim team, freshly released from a COVID-related quarantine, powered to a pair of victories Tuesday at the MCB pool.
The hosts defeated Algona, 55-37, and Grinnell, 50-36, with Grinnell beating Algona, 48-44, as the format called for each team to be scored independently against each of their two opponents.
The biggest splash was made by Perry junior Jaylene Karolus, who erased a 23-year old school record in winning the 100 freestyle. Karolus won in 57.59 seconds, shaving .18 ticks off her previous personal best. Her effort reset the old mark, set in 1997, by Janae Weiser. Perry teammate Jenna Nelson was second against both foes in the race in 1:10.2.
Nelson trimmed 1.96 seconds off her previous best in winning the 200 free in 2 minutes, 25.94 seconds, with Karolus first against both opponents and Zoe Hibbert second against both in the 200 individual medley with times of 2:27.1 and of 2:47.66, respectively.
Amanda Holwegner was 1-2 (first to Algona, second to Grinnell) in the 50 free in 29.5 seconds, with Rhylan Agan 2-3 in 39.71.
Sophia McDevitt won the 100 butterfly in 1:06.42, with Holwegner 1-2 in the 100 breaststroke in 1:25.14 while Emily Dowd was 2-2 in the 100 backstroke in 1:27.17.
Dowd swam the 500 free for Perry, finishing 2-2 in 7:23.15.
Perry was first against both Algona and Grinnell in all three relays, beginning with the 200 free relay, in which McDevitt, Holwegner, Hibbert and Dowd finished in 2:13.41.
McDevitt, Nelson, Hibbert and Karolus teamed to win the 200 free relay in 1:57.47, with Karolus, Nelson, Hibbert and McDevitt — in order — claiming the 400 free relay in 4:14.31, a season-best effort.
Perry returns to action Tuesday with a long trip to Spencer, returning the favor after the Tigers came to the MCB in 2019. The two teams will be joined by Atlantic for a double-dual.
