The Perry High School girls wrestling team took fourth place over all among the 31 team that competed Saturday in the Ogden High School tournament.

Due to illness and injuries, the Jayettes marshalled only eight grapplers out of 14 possible weight classes, yet they managed to score 133 teams points, just falling short of first-place winners Osage, second-place winners Ridge View and Dallas Center-Grimes, which took third.

Two Jayettes came away champions. PHS senior Charity Mickles at 130 lbs and sophomore Julie Maylum at 140 lbs brought in a total of 57 team points and earned gold medals for their efforts.

Sophomore Lauren Rodgers at 145 lbs earned a silver medal and improved her ranking by pinning a previous state champion in the semifinals.

Sophomore Mercedes Ponce placed third at 105 lbs and scored 22 team points for the Jayettes.

Freshman Ayden Erickson continues to show promise for the Jayettes. She placed fifth in the tournament at 125 lbs and scored 18 team points.

In a very competitive bracket, PHS senior Taylor Atwell at 115 lbs returned to wrestling after a long injury break. She placed seventh out of 17 wrestlers.

“With about three weeks left before they wrestle to qualify for the state tournament, they are starting to hit their stride,” said a Jayette booster. “We wrestle at home on the 13th and at Glenwood on the 20th. On the 27th they will be at the Iowa Event Center to punch their tickets to Coralville!”

This Friday the Jayettes will send four more athletes to the mats, with Perry competing against 11 other teams for a championship trophy. Wrestling starts at 5 p.m. in the PHS gym.
