CARROLL — The Perry girls soccer team traveled west for the first and only time this season Thursday and made the most of the their trip by leaving Carroll with a 5-0 win in Raccoon River Conference play.

The win was the first for the Jayettes in their last five games and lifted their overall record to 5-9. Perry is 2-5 in RRC play.

“We played a heck of a game,” assistant coach Fred Niebaum said. “We communicated, we talked and we played some great ‘through’ balls. It was great having Glenda Cruz and Stephania Almanza back in the lineup, too.”

Cruz waited all of 18 minutes and 10 seconds of her first game of the season to score her first goal as she beat the keeper off an assist from K.C. Gafkjen. Cruz then assisted on a Sydney Guerra goal just under four minutes later to set the score at 2-0, where it remained until the intermission.

Guerra scored for the ninth time this year in the 48th minute off a Grace Marburger pass. Gafkjen put Perry ahead, 4-0, off a Guerra assist in the 22nd minute, with Cruz finishing the match with a goal with only 33 seconds to play. The score came on the sixth assist of the season from Marburger.

Perry keeper Amparo Menendez had four saves, including a pair of back-to-back stops late in the contest to preserve her third shutout of the season.

The junior varsity squad was also victorious, as the Jayette JV posted a 1-0 win.

The Perry JV is slated to play at a tourney in Newton Monday, with the varsity team visiting Des Moines Lincoln for a game at Cownie Park. The regular season will end with May 26 when Atlantic visits Dewey Field.
