Carroll scored the first two points of their Raccoon River Conference girls basketball game with host Perry Friday. By the time the Tigers scored for the second time, Perry had put 30 points on the board en route to a 34-7 halftime lead and a 55-20 victory.
The Tigers (1-5, 0-3) briefly considered opting out of a playing a varsity schedule this year, but relented and will consider this season a learning experience. The team has no seniors and just three juniors, with six sophomores and eight freshmen rounding out the program.
A 54-36 win Dec. 5 over Storm Lake snapped an 18-game losing streak, with their last victory prior to that a 51-41 win against Storm Lake Dec. 2 of 2014. The last Tiger win against a team other than the Tornados was a 53-48 defeat of Denison-Schleswig February 13, 2013.
Since then the team is a combined 2-45, and while outclassed against the Jayettes (3-5, 1-2), managed to play with energy throughout the contest.
However, Carroll simply had no answer under the basket for Perry’s Taylor Lathrum, who had seven points and seven rebounds as Perry burst out to a 19-2 lead after one quarter, a time frame in which the guests committed 11 turnovers.
By halftime the issue had long been decided, with Perry using the opportunity to substitute freely and work on areas the coaches felt needed addressed at game speed.
The Jayettes held a 54-16 lead after three frames, with only one Perry free throw and two Carroll baskets added to the scoreboard during a fourth quarter played with a continuous clock.
Lathrum finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds and three steals while Grace Marburger added 10 points and four assists and Jo Diw nine points. Emma Olejniczak had eight points, six rebounds and five steals, Victoria Hegstrom five points, Alyssa Kruger four points, Mariah Duffy two points and Grace Stewart one.
Taylor Woosely had five points for the Tigers, with Bailey Brincks adding four points and Taylor Mohr three. Baskets from Sydney Renning, Karlee Jones, Marissa Tunning and Josie Pettitt capped the visitor scoring.
Perry will host Des Moines Hoover Monday for a junior varsity/varsity girls-only set that will cap the pre-holiday portion of the schedule for the Jayettes.
