The scoring woes continued Saturday for the Perry softball team, as the Jayettes fell to Van Meter, 6-2, and to IKM-Manning, 4-2, at the annual Paul and Mary Ann Graves Tournament.
Once six-team classic played over two diamonds at Pattee Park, the tourney has been reduced to four teams and for the first time was played at the PAC Saturday.
Interstate-35 defeated IKM-Manning in the other semifinal, then topped Van Meter, 8-7, to win the tourney title.
Perry started their day with a bang, as Johanna Diw laced a solo home run over the fence in left in the top of the first inning. The Jayettes added a second run in the third when Emma Olejniczak walked, swiped second and scored on an error.
Unfortunately for Perry, Katelyn Whelchel’s sixth-inning single was their only other hit in the game.
Van Meter scored twice in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game, then secured the victory with four runs in their half of the sixth.
Olejniczak allowed six runs (three earned)on five hits and a walk while striking out nine.
Perry was the home team on the scoreboard against IKM-Manning and found themselves trailing, 3-0, entering the bottom of the fourth.
Rachel Kinney singled and scored on an Alyssa Kruger triple, with Whelchel singling home Kruger to cut the deficit to 3-2. Brooke Huntington added a two-out single but Whelchel was eventually thrown out at the plate as the Wolves preserved their lead.
Abbey Youngren’s solo blast in the top of the sixth gave IKM-Manning a 4-2 lead and was the last run plated in the game.
Olejniczak suffered the loss in the ring. She tossed six innings, surrendering four runs on five hits while striking out 13. Sidney Vancil tossed an inning of relief, yielding one hit.
Singles from Diw and Maddy Jans were the only other hits for the Jayettes.
