The Jayettes had plenty to smile about yesterday when they were informed of the their postseason placing. Tough? Yes. More promising than in the past few years? Definitely.

SAYDEL — Perry played error-free defense and belted 14 hits in recording a 7-0 win over Saydel in non-conference softball Thursday.

The Eagles (12-4) were never able to dial in Jayette starter Emma Olejniczak, who allowed just three hits and a walk while striking out six in seven innings in the ring.

Perry (10-8) wasted little time in seizing a lead as the guests scored three times in the first inning.

A Jo Diw single and Sid Vancil push-bunt base hit put two runners aboard, with Rachel Kinney’s double scoring one run. Olejniczak followed with a RBI ground-out, with Kinney scoring on a passed ball for a 3-0 Jayette lead.

Perry tacked on four runs in the top of the fifth, with a Diw single and another Kinney double starting the rally. A walk to Olejniczak loaded the bases with no outs.

Two outs later it appeared the visitors were going to leave the bags juiced without scoring, but Maddy Jans delivered a clutch two-run single to spark the surge. Gabby West followed with her second base hit of the game, with a Diw double driving in the final two Perry runs.

Diw was 3-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and two stolen bases, with Kinney plating a run with two doubles while Olejniczak was 2-for-3 with a double and a RBI. West and Alyssa Kruger were both 2-for-3, with Vancil adding a single and Brooke Huntington a single and stolen base.

Perry is now 8-2 against non-conference foes and will play twice today and twice again Saturday in Roland as part of the annual Roland-Story Kiwanis Tournament. All four Perry games will be on the north field, with Perry to face Roland-Story at 1:30 p.m. and South Hamilton at 5:30 p.m. today. Saturday will see Perry pitted against Mt. Vernon at 10:30 a.m. and Gilbert at 4:30 p.m.
