ALLEMAN — “I was very happy with how we played offensively, and liked much of what I saw on defense, too,” Perry girls basketball head coach Chris Morrow said after the Jayettes claimed a 29-24 win over GMG at the North Polk Jamboree Tuesday. “It was good to see us using what we have been working on, and we were also able to see areas that we will be working on the next few practices.”
Jamboree games are scrimmages played for two regulation quarters and are officiated as a real game would be. Perry led, 20-4, after one quarter and had a 29-8 advantage halfway through the second frame when Morrow pulled his starters, allowing all 12 Jayettes to seeing playing time.
The Wolverines immediately took advantage and managed to score 16 unanswered points against the Jayette reserves to close the contest down only five points.
Jo Diw and Molly Lutmer had 13 points apiece to lead Perry. Each sank a trio of 3-point shots. A basket from Grace Stewart and a Gabby West free throws capped Perry’s scoring.
Zoe Duncan’s 10 points led Green Mountain-Garwin, with McKenzie Vaske adding eight points.
Morrow said the game allowed him to note areas that need addressing. One such place will be at the foul line, where Perry made just one of eight attempts at the charity stripe.
“Overall I have to say I am pleased with our effort, especially scoring 29 points in just over 12 minutes,” he added. “I am now looking forward to Friday even more than I was before.”
Perry will host Des Moines North for a junior varsity/varsity set Friday beginning at 6 p.m. They will face host Des Moines East, Harlan and Pella in a quadrangular scrimmage Saturday before playing a regulation game at Newton Nov. 21.
Perry visits Greene County Nov. 28, with the Jayettes and Bluejays hosting Carroll Dec. 1 in the first Raccoon River Conference twin bill of the season.
