FORT DODGE — The hot serving of several players and a stingy defense combined to lift Perry past Fort Dodge St. Edmond, 3-0, in the volleyball season-opener for both team Thursday.
Perry posted a 25-21 win in game one before rolling to a 25-11 victory in game two. The Jayettes completed the sweep with a 25-21 triumph in the third game.
“This was so fun to watch,” Perry head coach Kristel Kautzky said. “No one took it upon themselves to try and be the hero; they just all played together very well.
“Our passing was much improved from Tuesday’s scrimmage and it created a ton of hitting attempts for us,” she said. “We were very aggressive and played well all around and I thought we served very well. Like I said before, it was just really fun to see us play like this.”
Sidney Vancil was of 16-of-16 serving with an ace, with Jo Diw 15-15-3, Ellie Nielsen 10-10-2, Taylor Lathrum 10-10-1 and Grace Marburger 8-10-4.
Nielsen led the team with 11 digs, with Marburger making five digs, Vancil and Victoria Hegstrom four apiece and Mariah Duffy three.
Marburger and Nielsen tallied seven kills apiece, with Hegstrom making three blocks while Lathrum played the contest without a hitting error. The attack was set up by 19 assists from Vancil.
Perry will compete in the 16-team Skip Anderson Classic at Bondurant Saturday beginning at 9 a.m. Perry has been assigned to Pool D, along with Gilbert, Waverly-Shell Rock and Davis County. The Jayettes open play against Davis County. Pool D action will be held at Anderson Elementary.
At the conclusion of pool play, teams will be reassigned locations, with the championship brackets beginning at 1:30 p.m.
