Senior Katelyn Whelchel singles back up the middle against Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln at the W-G Classic June 12. Whelchel and her teammates won both of their games Saturday at the R-S Classic.

ROLAND — “We had a very solid day and played the way we are capable of playing,” Perry head coach Tina Kenney said. “It was great to see some of the girls pull out some key hits and play solid defense and gain some confidence.”

Kenney’s Jayettes were unfazed by a Roland-Story Classic scheduled that was pushed back by lightning delays earlier Saturday. Indeed, any charge in the atmosphere may have come off the Perry bats, as the Jayettes topped Nevada, 5-0, in their first game before coming back a few hours later to stop host R-S, 6-2. Both games were played to just five innings due to time constraints.

Sophomore pitcher Emma Olejniczak handcuffed opposing batters from both teams. She yielded just two hits and two walks while striking out six in blanking the Cubs, then fanned eight and allowed only two hits against the Norsemen, with both R-S runs unearned.

“Emma threw very well and really shut their offenses down,” Kenney noted. “It is fun when the team is working for each other, executes at the plate and gets their job done on the field, all with confidence and smiles.”

Johanna Diw singled, moved up on an Olejniczak sacrifice and a dropped third strike and then scored off an Alyssa Kruger RBI-ground out as Perry grabbed a 1-0 lead over Nevada in the bottom of the first.

Olejniczak singled in the third, then, with the hit-and-run on, was safe on a play at second with Rachel Kinney batting. A Victoria Hegstrom singled plated one run, with a Katelyn Whelchel RBI-ground out scoring another as the lead grew to 3-0 in the third.

Brooke Huntington walked and Olejniczak was hit by a pitch in the fourth, with Kinney doubling in both runs.

Whelchel, Maddie West and Sidney Vancil also had hits in the victory.

Perry struck quickly against R-S as well, with Olejniczak singling, stealing second, moving up on a Kinney base hit and trotting home when Hegstrom singled for a 1-0 edge in the top of the first.

Doubles from Vancil and Huntington, singles from Diw and Kinney and an error with Kruger batting sent four Jayettes across the plate in the second as the margin swelled to 5-0.

The hosts put two unearned runs on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third, but Perry responded in the fourth. Diw doubled to start the rally, moving to third on an Olejniczak sac fly to right and sprinting home when Kinney lifted a sac fly to center.

Diw finished 3-for-4 with a double, two runs, a steal and a RBI, with Olejniczak 1-for-3 with a run and a steal while Kinney went 2-for-2 with a run, two RBIs and two thefts.

Perry hosts Winterset at the PAC Monday.
