NEWTON — Perry rallied from a 13-point deficit in the fourth quarter to trail by only three, but could not finish off the comeback in falling, 56-47, to Newton Tuesday in non-conference play.

Newton (2-0) had defeated Bondurant-Farrar, 61-29, Saturday, and having a game under their belts may have served the Cardinals well against a Perry (0-1) team that fell behind early and could never quite catch up.

The Jayettes trailed, 13-12, after one quarter and faced a 25-19 hole at the intermission. The Cardinals were able to open a 42-31 lead in the third period and extended the margin to as many as 13 points on three different occasions early in the fourth frame before Perry began to slow climb back into the game.

The visitors were within five points with three minutes to play and closed to within a possession, at 50-47, with 1:36 to play.

Newton then managed to convert a wild 3-point shot and followed up with free throws down the stretch to score the final six points in the game and secure the win.

Sydney Jacobs led the hosts with 13 points, with Ryanne Rausch adding 12.

Perry trimmed a 13-point fourth-quarter deficit to three points, but could not complete the comeback.

Sixteen points from Grace Marburger and 14 from Taylor Lathrum paced Perry.

Mariah Duffy had six points, Jo Diw and Victoria Hegstrom four apiece and Emma Olejniczak three to close out the Jayette scoring ledger.

Diw pulled in eight rebounds and Duffy five, with Olejniczak finishing with four assists.

The Jayettes will join their Bluejay counterparts for a non-conference twinset at Greene County Tuesday, with a Dec. 4 visit from Carlisle kicking off the Raccoon River Conference portion of the schedule for both Perry squads.
