Jean was born in Boone, Iowa, on March 4, 1926, the daughter of Lucien and Mary (Trougher) Doran.
Her family moved to Perry in 1936, where she finished school, graduating from Perry High School in 1943. Jean attended Grinnell College for 1.5 years, majoring in music. She transferred to the University of Colorado in Boulder, studying music and majoring in business.
While living in Colorado, she met her husband, Marion, also from Perry. They were united in marriage on Feb. 14, 1950, in Perry, Iowa.
Early in her adult life, Jean worked for an insurance company in Des Moines and for an Oldsmobile agency in Perry.
Marion and Jean moved to her father’s family farm near Ogden, where they resided until 1974, when they moved to the New Virginia, Iowa, area.
She was a church organist throughout much of her life, in Perry, Osceola and Marshalltown. Jean kept busy accompanying school age children for vocal and band contests and choirs, also playing for weddings and funerals.
Jean’s love for music and piano led her to share her talents with children. She was fortunate to be able to stay home and give piano lessons. She loved teaching the art of piano to children and enjoyed hearing from many of her former students throughout the years.
Jean is survived by her five children, Bob (Evelyn) Hurd of Lawndale, California, Jeff (Deb) Hurd of Hesston, Kansas, the Rev. Tim Hurd of Shreveport, Louisiana, Ron (Ruth) Hurd of Marshalltown and Ginger (Mike) Broussard of Shreveport, Louisiana; nine grandchildren, Erin, Stephanie, Rebecca, Christopher, Emily, Julie, Alex, Claire and Adrian; and 11 great grandchildren, Annabel, Emma, Phoebe, Ivy, Porter, Hazel, River, Lincoln, Maverick, Austyn, and Emmett.
