Jefferson Police Report November 12

November 8, 2019

  • An officer checked on a male sleeping in a vehicle at 222 E. Lincoln Way. The male was sleeping before his work shift and was okay.
  • Officers were assisted by the Greene County Sheriff’s office and the Greene County Ambulance with a personal-injury accident at 220th Street and Grimmell Road. A 1995 Chevrolet Camaro, owned and operated by Keaton Hetland of Jewell, was travelling west on 220th Street and stopped at the intersection of Grimmell Road to wait for oncoming traffic before making a left turn onto Grimmell Road when a 2014 Ford Taurus, owned and operated by Spencer Kirk of Grand Junction, struck the rear of the stopped Hetland vehicle. Both vehicles were a total loss and towed from the scene. Both drivers were checked by the Greene County Ambulance for minor injuries, but both refused transport to ER. Kirk was issued a citation for failure to stop in assured clear distance.
  • A Greene County Community School District bus driver turned in a school bus violation form to the Law Enforcement Center. A vehicle passed the stopped school bus near Vine and Madison streets after the bus’ lights and stop arm were activated. The officer’s investigation led to Amanda Eritt of Jefferson being issued a citation for unlawful passing of school bus.
  • Officers performed a Funeral Escort.
  • A retail store reported a vehicle backed into a trash can before leaving 303 N. Elm St. The trash can received damage estimated at $80. An officer reviewed video of the event and determined the driver to be Lisa Owens of Scranton. Owens reported she was involved but did not think she had caused any damage. She later noticed damage to the rear bumper of her 2013 Ford F150. The damage was estimated at $200 for the truck. The accident occurred on private property, so no citation was issued.
  • Officers were requested near Grimmell Road and Russell Street for a vehicle that struck a deer. The 2005 Chevrolet Silverado K1500 was owned and operated by Gene Haman of Jefferson. Damage to the vehicle was estimated at 100. Haman was given a salvage tag for the deer.
  • John Peters reported large amounts of mud and debris on the roadway in the 200 block of Briarwood Bend due to local construction. An officer spoke to the job site foreman to find solutions to the issue.
  • Officers escorted the Greene County High School football players out of town for the Algona game.
  • An officer assisted the Juvenile Court Officer in gathering a urine analysis collection kit from a juvenile at the Greene County Court House.
  • Ronnie Baugh spoke with an officer about a Greene County Elementary School staff member being inappropriate toward his juvenile daughter. The officer is investigating the event.

November 9, 2019

  • A traffic stop near Lincoln Way and Elm Street resulted in Jill Klemish of Exira being issued a citation for failure to obey stop sign.
  • A traffic stop in the 1600 block of N. Elm Street resulted in Craig Chitty of Audubon being issued a citation for operation without registration.
  • A traffic stop at Lincoln Way and Wilson Street resulted in Mary Miller of Kalona being issued a citation for driving while suspended.
  • Thomas Alexander Oyres, 40, of Jefferson was arrested at 409 N. Maple St. on outstanding Jefferson Police Department warrants for first-offense possession of controlled substance-methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia. The charges stem from an investigation that started June 12, 2019, at 108 W. State St.

November 10, 2019

  • A traffic stop at 220th Street and Orchard Avenue resulted in Nathan Black of Jefferson being issued a citation for excessive speed.
  • An officer performed a traffic stop with a speeding vehicle near Elm Street and Lincoln Way, leading to the arrest of Kaleb Lee Lentz, 25, of Scranton for first-offense OWI, open container/driver and excessive speed.
  • Mia Carman reported debris in the roadway in the 1300 block of S. Elm Street. An officer removed the debris from the roadway.
  • Tina Peck reported her neighbors were arguing very loudly at 307 W. Lincoln Way St. An officer made contact with a couple, who said they were involved in a verbal argument. The male left for the evening to let things cool off.
  • An officer assisted the Greene County Ambulance with a medical call in the 1200 block of Westwood Drive.
  • Gailee Richter reported children playing with guns in the 100 block of E. Central Avenue. An officer located the children and determined the guns were toy guns.
  • A Greene County Deputy requested assistance from an officer in locating a missing male who is possibly in Jefferson. The male was located in Des Moines a short time later.
  • John Lewis reported a stray dog in his yard at 102 N. Maple St. He believed the animal belonged to a neighbor, which the neighbor denied.
  • An officer assisted the Greene County Ambulance with a medical call in the 200 block of E. Perry Street.
  • Officers responded to an alarm activation at 108 W. Lincoln Way St. The alarm was accidental, and all was fine at the business.

November 11, 2019

  • Nancy Zollars reported a suspicious male in a vehicle parked in the 300 block of N. Pinet Street. An officer made contact with the male, who advised he was living in his vehicle. He left the area after speaking to the officer.
  • An officer assisted a driver with mechanical problems near Lincoln Way and Cedar Street.
  • Amy Baugh reported a suspicious vehicle driving through the alley in the 400 block on N. Chestnut Street.
  • An officer was advised of a 911 hang-up call from 506 E. Russell St. A child was playing with the phone.
  • Jennifer Ashby reported the theft of prescription medications from 108 E. Central Ave., #66.
  • Officers issued 13 citations for snow emergency parking violations during this reporting period.
