The appointment of Joanne Warnock of Perry, standing, to a four-year term on the Perry Planning and Zoning Commission was unanimously approved by the Perry City Council at its Monday meeting.

The Perry City Council unanimously approved at its Monday meeting the appointment of Joanne Warnock of Perry to a four-year term on the seven-member Perry Planning and Zoning Commission.

It is not altogether clear whom Warnock succeeds on the commission. According to the city of Perry website, the current members of the Perry Planning and Zoning Commission are Jim “J. P.” Hulgan, Wilbur Dickerson, Rueben Gonzalez, Alice Miskimins, Frank Eiteman, Erin Butler and Ashley Platt.

Dickerson died in July 2018. Gonzalez and Miskimins indicated at the July 2019 meeting they would not seek reappointment to the commission. Ron Leber and Matt McDevitt were appointed to the commission in recent months.

Warnock explained her willingness to assume the unpaid, voluntary position on the commission as a way “to give back to the community.”

Among its duties, the Perry Planning and Zoning Commission reviews all plans, plats and re-plats of subdivisions or re-subdivisions of land with the city of Perry, including divisions and properties falling within the two-mile zone of review outside the corporate limits of Perry. The commission’s recommendations to the Perry City Council are made legally effective by council action.

The P&Z Commission also reviews and comments on streets, parks and other public improvement affecting the city comprehensive plan. Many of the duties and responsibilities of the Perry Planning and Zoning Commission are governed by Code of Iowa, Sec. 392.1 and Sec. 414.6.
