John Ivor Alexander, 71, son of Peggy and Lester Alexander, was born Dec. 28, 1946, in Perry, Iowa, and passed away March 6, 2018, at his home outside of Woodward.

After graduating from Perry High School in 1965, Uncle Sam invited him to see the world. John served three years in the Army, 18 months of those in Vietnam, and 37 years at the U.S. Postal Service in Des Moines.

In 1986 John married Karen Ness at Living History Farm and became an instant father to Nicki, Lawrence and Tom. Later he would become a beloved grandfather to eight.

John loved watching old Westerns and wrestling. He cheered for Iowa State, Green Bay and the Dodgers. He loved pasta, playing cards, putting puzzles together, going fishing, camping, gambling and hunting for mushrooms.

If you needed a shoulder to cry on, his was always there. We all will deeply miss those “hugs” and “I love you.” That smile will be missed.

John leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 32 years, Karen; three children, Nicki (John) Michels and their children, Molly, Sam, and Beth, Lawrence Ness and Tom (Heather) Ness and their children, Mathew, Alexis, Justin, Ian and Lawrence; two nieces, Tess (Mike) Jaspering and Lisa (Randy) Ahrenholtz; and many friends; neighbors; and his dog, Cy.

John was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Tom.
