Former U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry will speak in Adel at noon Wednesday in a campaign event in support of Democratic presidential hopeful Joseph Biden.

Josh Varcie, an organizer for the Biden campaign in Dallas County, announced Sunday that Kerry will appear at the Adel bowling alley at 1526 Greene St. in Adel. The event is free and open to the public.

Kerry enlisted in the U.S. Naval Reserve in 1966 and served between 1968 and 1969 an abbreviated four-month tour of duty in South Vietnam as officer-in-charge of a Swift Boat. For that service, he was awarded combat medals that include the Silver Star Medal, Bronze Star Medal and three Purple Heart Medals.

During the 2004 presidential campaign, Kerry’s Republican opponents financed a smear campaign that questioned Kerry’s credibility and patriotism in relation to his military service in Vietnam, a campaign that came to be called swiftboating.
