Josephine Gates, 86, of Perry passed away Tuesday, Dec. 13, 2022, at her home in Perry, Iowa, surrounded by her family. Funeral services will be held Monday, Dec. 19 at 11 a.m., with visitation beginning at 10 a.m., at the Carris Family Funeral Home and Cremation Care in Perry. Burial will be in the Violet Hill in Perry, Iowa.
Josephine Phyllis Gates was born Nov. 16, 1936, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to William J. and Betty L. (Frana) Cisler.
She graduated from Wilson High School in Cedar Rapids.
Josephine was united in marriage to James Daniel Gates in Cedar Rapids on July 1, 1959.
She worked as a nurse’s aide at the Mercy Hospital in Cedar Rapids and the St. Monica Hospital in Santa Monica, California, and as a nurse’s aide at the New Haven Nursing Home in Des Moines.
Josephine was a member of the St. Patrick Catholic Church in Perry.
She enjoyed collecting angels, playing games, especially dominos, and flower gardening.
Josephine thought the world of her grandchildren.
In death she rejoins her parents, William and Betty Cisler; sisters, Jo Ann Uswick and Judy Brown; and brother, Bill Cisler Jr.
Left to cherish Josephine’s memory are her husband, James Gates; children, Nancy M. Gates of Des Moines, Sandra S. (Robert) Mason of Osceola and Betty Jo Gates of Des Moines; grandchildren, Christina Gates, Bobby J. Mason and Matt D. Mason; and great-grandchildren, Bryce Mason and Pierce Mason.
