Karolus, Andemichael lead Perry at HOIC cross country meet

JEWELL, IOWA — Senior Jaylene Karolus placed fourth in the girls race and junior Fithawi Andemichael was fourth in the boys competition to pace Perry Monday at the HOIC conference meet hosted by South Hamilton.

The Jayettes finished sixth in a seven-team girls field, with the Bluejays fourth in a seven-team boys grouping. The Greene County girls and PCM boys did not have the five entries required to produce a team score.

Roland-Story swept the top three individual spots to win the girls crown with 25 points. South Hamilton was second at 62, with West Marshall (102), Nevada (110), PCM (111), Perry (118) and Saydel (175) following.

Nevada (32) and Greene County (71) were 1-2 in the boys event, with R-S (91), Perry (104), South Hamilton (108), West Marshall (118) and Saydel (200) in tow.

Lauryn Kilstofle won the girls race in 20 minutes, 28 seconds, with Norse teammates Claire Truesdell (20:56) and Reece Johnson (21:00) following.

Karolus crossed in 21:34 to place fourth. Taryn Nehring (23:19) and Julie Maylum (24:15) place 16th and 25th, respectively, for Perry, with Mercedes Ponce 36th in 25:40 and Mylah Meis 37th in 25:55. Amy Diaz (40th, 26:15) and Denise Rivera (45th, 28:26) also had varsity times, with Laurine Calamy (30:01) running for Perry as well.

Karolus and Calamy are seniors, with the six other Jayettes all freshmen.

Nicholas Thompson (17:21) of West Marshall and Nathan Limas (17:28) of R-S were 1-2 for the boys. Nevada’s Owen Freeman was one second faster than Andemichael, 17:34 to 17:35, to finish third.

Following his junior brother for Perry was freshman Yonas Andemichael, who finished 16th in 19:25. Juniors Gannon Meis (19:54) and Jonathan Chavez (20:26) were 21st and 30th, respectively, with freshman Owen Myers 33rd in 20:52. Also posting varsity times were freshman Aiden Carlson (21:52) and sophomore Mason Hoffman (22:02).

Bryce Anliker (22:32), Kyle Hernandez (23:24), Renzo Saenz (23:57), Jose Chavez (24:51), Kevin Barrientos (26:09) and Issac Ballard (26:27) also ran for the Jays.

South Hamilton (49), West Marshall (60), R-S (63), Nevada (72), Perry (141) and Saydel (147) was the finishing order for the girls two-mile middle school race, while Nevada (39), R-S (65), West Marshall (82), PCM (85), Greene County (88) and Perry (135) was the order in the boys event.

Olivia Beaune (13:47) of South Hamilton and Coby Deraad (11:49) of PCM were the two individual victors.

Perry’s Lily Myers finished in 14:01 to place third overall. Amelie Canales (33rd, 19:18), Rosa Pineda (34th, 19:23), Fiorella Oliver (35th, 20:27) and Aleah Karolus (20:49) also scored for the Jayettes. Running for the Jayettes as well were Iliana Ledesma (37th, 22:33) and Sofia Saenz (38th, 22:40). Ledesma is in eighth grade, the other Jayettes are seventh graders.

Thad Stuart sped to seventh overall for Perry with a clocking of 13:02. Gavin Leslie (20th, 14:09), Kyeo Augustine (35th, 16:30), Diego Diaz-Cardenas (36th, 17:47) and Angel Rodriguez-Molina (37th, 19:16) completed the circuit to score for Perry as well. Stuart, Augustine and Rodriguez-Molina are in grade eight, Leslie and Diaz-Cardenas in grade seven.
