Knife-wielding West Des Moines man arrested on assault charge

Daniel Joseph Sims, 38, of West Des Moines was arrested Tuesday on charges of assault while displaying a dangerous weapon, carrying weapons-knife over five inches and fifth-degree criminal mischief.

A West Des Moines man allegedly threatened another man with a knife Tuesday after slashing the other man’s tire.

Daniel Joseph Sims, 38, of 6017 Vista Dr., West Des Moines, was charged with assault while displaying a dangerous weapon, carrying weapons-knife over five inches and fifth-degree criminal mischief.

The incident began about 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in the 6700 block of Vista Drive, where officers of the West Des Moines Police Department responded to a report of a knife fight.

The officers made contact with Sims, who allegedly “did display a knife in a threatening manner during a verbal argument with the victim,” according to court records.

Sims also allegedly “did damage the victim’s front passenger-side tire by stabbing it
with a knife,” according to court records.

Sims was held in the Dallas County Jail prior to posting a $3,000 cash or surety bond. He is scheduled for a preliminary hearing June 9 in Dallas County District Court.

Sims was convicted of discharging a firearm in 2002 in Polk County District Court. He was convicted of carrying a concealed weapon without a permit in 2017 in Polk County District Court.

*A criminal charge is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
