Kolby Gilroy of Bondurant capped an exciting finish Sunday to win the 11th annual Memorial Golf Tourney by one stroke at the Perry Golf and Country Club.

Gilroy trailed leader Gionni Chiodo by two strokes after 18 holes as Chiodo carded a four under par 68. Gilroy and former champion Nick Luett shot two under 70s on the first 18 holes, but on the championship nine (final nine holes), Gilroy pulled even when he birdied hole #1, while Chiodo bogeyed the same hole.

Andrew Andorfer (71) and Andrew Lallier (71) kept the pressure on by shooting 35s on the final nine holes. Gilroy, a former Iowa Central Community College golfer, kept his poise and fired a final nine holes of 35, while Chiodo and Luett fell back with 39s.

Gilroy shot three consecutive 35s to tour the Perry course in three under 105 (70, 35).

In the senior division (ages 50-69), Steve Montgomery fired a fine four under 68 to claim the title by two strokes over last year’s co-champion, John Putbrese (70).

The first year for the super senior division (ages 70 and older) saw Randy “Doc” McCaulley take first place with a score of 79.

A total of 82 golfers played in this year’s Memorial Golf Tourney, with 53 battling for the open title and 29 competing in the senior or super senior divisions.

This year’s honoree was long-time Perry Golf and Country Club member Merle Adamson, who dies in 2022. He worked for 43 years for Oscar Mayer, IBP and Tyson Foods, retiring in 2007 as a general supervisor at the plant. Merle was a CB enthusiast and was also very active in youth league sports in Perry.
