A Dawson couple was convicted Friday in Dallas County District Court of animal neglect in connection with the starvation death of three dogs in November 2019 at their Dawson home.
Jason Lee Krull, 35, of 308 E. Third St., Dawson, was issued three citations Dec. 31, 2019, for animal neglect-no death or serious injury.
Bonnie Kay Mundt Krull, 32, of 308 E. Third St., Dawson, was issued three citations Dec. 31, 2019, for animal neglect-no death or serious injury.
By Iowa law, the Krulls were each sentenced to three days in the Dallas County Jail and assessed a $450 fine plus surcharge for their simple misdemeanors.
How many days does it take to starve your 3 dogs to death? How many days did you NOTICE but walk on by, knowing they have nothing to eat? How many excuses did you make for not feeding your dogs? We live in this world with many flawed humans, but this is unforgivable. Our animal cruelty laws are very lax. I would say the price you paid does not send a strong enough message to others. Sad and shameful.
I would bet that they had the dogs where they didn’t walk by them or look at them. I agree that there needs to be a strong message to others that cruelty is not tolerated period. Punishment to instill regret and more punishment to make sure.
After viewing those pictures, we now know who was eating those poor dogs’ food. Couldn’t one of those obese “people” share a few morsels instead of feeding those fat faces?
Iowa should make these crimes felonies with prison sentences that are effective deterrents. Enhancement for additional suffering. I hope that they will find significant consequences that disrupt their lives far beyond three days and a paycheck. Sick, disgusting, pathetic wastes.
Iowa Code 717B defines neglect that results in serious injury or death as a serious misdemeanor, not simple, as these folks were sentenced. Why the leniency? Data shows that those who subject animals to cruelty are at increased risk of committing cruelty toward humans. Three days and $450 is not deterrent enough. This state still has a lot of work to do to address animal cruelty.
