Lawrence “Larry” W. Devine, 93, of Algona died May 1, 2018, at Mercy Medical Center West Lakes in West Des Moines, Iowa.
Larry was born August 10, 1924, in Sigourney, Iowa, to James and Edwina (Nemmers) Devine, the fourth son in a family of four boys and one girl. His father died when he was 2 years old.
He graduated from Sigourney High School in Sigourney and attended Iowa State University in Ames and St. Ambrose in Davenport.
Larry married Darlene J. Thul on July 23, 1951, at St Michael’s Catholic Church in Whittemore.
He was a lifelong famer who was always giving to others in need. He did a lot of jobs in his lifetime. He helped build roads in Oklahoma, worked in the drying plants in Whittemore and worked with tiling machines for Paul Dahlhauser.
Larry is survived by his wife, Darlene J. of 66 years; eight daughters, Rebecca (Gary) Shock of Waterloo, Mary (John) Nolan of Fort Dodge, Colleen (Darrell) Lazar of Belle Vernon, Pa., Maureen (Bruce) Cahill of West Des Moines, Nancy (Bob) Umsted of Waverly, Kerry (Bill) Pirone of Darien, Conn., Rose (Dave) Schneider of Farley and Patti (Chris) Meyer of Bellingham, Wash.; three sons, Joe (Marcia) Devine of Clinton, Mo., Mike (Kerry) Devine of Cedar Falls and Terry (Debi) Devine of Bettendorf; 39 grandchildren; 26+ great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Eileen Devine of Sigourney and Barb Thul of Phoenix, Ariz.; and one brother-in-law, John Thul of Phoenix, Ariz.
He is preceded in death by his son, Kevin E. Devine, on June 30, 1988; his parents; three brothers, Francis, Joseph and James Devine; and one sister, Eileen Kulin.
A funeral mass for Larry will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 5 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Whittemore. Visitation we be held from 4-7 p.m. Friday, May 4 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, with a Rosary at 4 p.m. Burial will be at St. Michael’s Catholic Cemetery in Whittemore.
