Lee James Kinney, 68, of Minburn passed away peacefully Oct. 11, 2024, at the Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames, Iowa, after a courageous battle with prostate cancer, surrounded by his loving family.
A visitation will be held Thursday, Oct. 17 from 4-6 p.m. at the Caldwell Parrish Funeral Home-Perry Chapel at 1721 Park St. in Perry, with a memorial service to follow. A private family inurnment will take place on Friday, Oct. 18, 2024, at Elmwood Cemetery in Minburn, Iowa.
Lee was born on Nov. 13, 1955, in Perry, Iowa, to Roger and Carolyn (Welch) Kinney, the eldest of seven children.
He was deeply involved in Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts and participated in all sports during his adolescence.
As a young boy, Lee worked as the town paperboy and at Hunter’s Oil Station, and he played a role in starting the football team in Minburn.
Lee graduated from Central Dallas High School in Minburn in 1973.
On Oct. 30, 1982, Lee married the love of his life, Angela Walker, in Minburn. The couple made their home in the country and shared four lovely children, Justin, Tony, Melissa and Megan.
Lee was a dedicated family man, always encouraging his children and grandchildren in their pursuits, guiding them in sports and cheering them on in every activity. He cherished his family above all, especially his grandchildren.
Lee was an avid fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes, a lover of birdwatching, a sports enthusiast, camper and traveler.
He and Angela recently visited Boston to spend time with his eldest son and his family.
Lee had a knack for fixing things and found joy in working outside in his yard.
He had a special affection for animals, particularly dogs, and their home was once filled with as many as seven at a time.
After 41 years in the country, Lee and Angela returned to his hometown of Minburn.
Lee is survived by his devoted wife of 41 years, Angela Kinney of Minburn; his children, Justin (Tara) Kinney and their daughters, Addison and Joslyn, of Boston; Tony (Stacy) Kinney and their children, Landon, Dylan and Payton, of Woodward; Melissa Kinney and her son, Colton, of Perry; and Megan (Theron) Schroeder of Boone; his mother, Carolyn Kinney of Perry; his siblings, Randall (Kathleen) Kinney of Washington; Cindy Kinney of Urbandale; Clyde (fiancée Colette) Kinney of Michigan; Lori Kinney of Winterset; Lisa Wilson of Kansas and Janelle (Mike) Riley of Mitchellville, Iowa; as well as many nieces; nephews; relatives; and dear friends.
He was preceded in death by his father, Roger Kinney; and his in-laws, Audrey and Don Walker.
Lee’s legacy of love, dedication and support will continue to live on through his family and the countless lives he touched. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
