To the editor:

February is Black History Month, and I want to take a moment to celebrate what that means. We have made huge strides for equality in the Black community, but we still have far to go.

We recently elected the first Black woman to the White House, and the Biden Cabinet is the most diverse in U.S. history. The Black Lives Matter movement has garnered global attention, and people of all backgrounds are banding together to fight for the long-overdue equality that Black folks deserve.

We have made incredible progress, but there is still so much ground left to cover.

This month, I want to encourage you to take time to learn about Black history, the figures who helped shape it and what you can do moving forward to be an ally to our Black communities. Celebrate the wins, but be sure to understand the history of them.

U.S. Rep. Cindy Axne
West Des Moines
