To the editor:
No matter which county you live in, voters must keep pressure on the supervisors. It is much too easy to rubber stamp the spending of county tax funds when the bureaucrats present expenses at the supervisors meetings.
These bureaucrats prepare the budget and get paid by the county, so many of them have a vested interest in more spending, which requires more property taxes.
The best solution is for supervisors to be involved with the details of the initial budget process. Don’t rely on the treasurer, auditor, recorder, attorney or sheriff to be entirely in charge of their budget. They have a vested interest in getting the largest budget for their departments.
That is not an exception. That is the way it is in all counties.
Notify the departments early on for the next year’s budget. Tell them next year’s budget is going to be frozen at the current year’s level. It is amazing how many “nice to have” expenses are removed from the budget when supervisors hold the departments to only “required” spending.
Don’t wait. Send your supervisors a message now, unless you enjoy paying higher property taxes.
