Letter to the editor: Keep gravel pit out of Granger Homestead

Working-class families achieved health, comfort and dignity in the 1930s through the federal social program of the Granger Homestead.

To the editor:

The Dallas County Board of Adjustment will be meeting at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 13 at the Community Services Room at 25747 N Ave., Adel. This meeting is the final step in the approval of a sand and gravel pit that is proposed by Martin Marietta to be located at 190th Street and W Avenue in Granger.

There has been much opposition to this sand and gravel pit and as a resident of the Granger community, I would like to encourage your readers to attend Tuesday’s meeting.

This Granger location is in an area with many high-dollar houses and within 50 feet of an existing house. If the trucks travel to and from the sand/gravel pit via Iowa Highway 141 and 190th Street, then they will be traveling through a 35 mph residential neighborhood on a road that has no shoulders and often has walkers and bicycle riders.

This is a horrible location for a sand and gravel pit.

This location is also in the historical Granger Homestead area. The Granger Homestead was a project for First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, and it was built for the coal miner families working and living in the local coal mines. Eleanor Roosevelt visited the Homestead when it was dedicated in 1936.

A historical marker in the center circle signifies the Granger Homestead’s importance along with a historical marker sign on Iowa Highway 141. All three of the Dallas County Supervisors are members of the Dallas County Historic Preservation Commission and should be promoting and protecting this historical area, not running it into the ground.

Please attend Tuesday’s meeting at the old county farm and let your voice be heard.
