To the editor:

It was disheartening to see so many of our Perry citizens sitting in their lawn chairs or on the ground when our flag passed by in the PHS Homecoming parade Wednesday.

It has long been an established sign of courtesy and respect to stand, remove hats and place the right hand over the heart when the flag passes by. Beginning with the Pledge of Allegiance in grade school, students are taught the meaning of respect for our flag and country.

Respecting the flag and all it represents doesn’t mean we always agree on every issue facing us today. It means an overall and encompassing respect for our country, for our veterans, for each other and for all the freedoms we enjoy.

Let’s all show respect and love one another as Americans with varied heritages.
