To the editor:
As a community member, educator, husband and father, I am invested in learning more from the aftermath of the tragic Jan. 4 school shooting. It is with respect for our legal system that I request a summary report of the investigation to be released.
I understand that there are limits to what information can be released, but a summary report would not only provide insight into the circumstances surrounding the event but also serve as a critical step in ensuring that we, as a community, continue to heal, learn from this incident and work together to help keep our children safe.
It is important to express my support for the county attorney, the judicial system and the Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation (DCI). Their diligence, professionalism and thoroughness in handling such a delicate and painful case is appreciated more than words can express. I trust their efforts to seek justice and bring clarity to this matter.
The release of a summary report, even if the legal processes continue, would be a valuable tool for the public to understand the challenges and responses that arose on that day.
It would also help stop the spread of rumors, speculations and doubts so that our schools can continue doing the work of educating our youth.
A report would aid in our collective healing, helping us to reflect on what went right and where we as a community can improve.
Finally, I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to our school leaders, educators, students, parents, and community members who have shown remarkable resilience, empathy, and support throughout this difficult time. This incident has tested us, and the vast majority of our community has responded by coming together. I’m proud to be part of the team.
