To the editor:

I applaud Rep. Chuck Isenhart’s efforts to reach beyond industry-controlled organizations and institutions to find solutions to our water quality problems in Iowa. I believe there are significant problems with current initiatives, such as trading and CREP wetlands.

Minnesota is leading on the buffer initiative. Those who care about life in Iowa, broadly speaking, need to weigh in on the coming debates over how to move forward. Measurement is essential to a scientific approach to solving our problems.

Human values, not the marketplace, must find space in this discussion as well. Pope Francis will make this case on Thursday.

Any Iowa politician willing to stick his or her neck out for healthy Iowa water needs to be supported personally and financially. We must thank and support these brave souls who are traveling outside the Iowa industry bubble to talk about these concerns: Dan Kelly (D), Rita Hart (D), Mark Segebart (R) and Ken Rosenboom (R).

Surely, concerned citizens can generate some support in some form or other for Rep. Isenhart and these other legislators.

Mike Delaney, president of Citizens for a Healthy Iowa
