To the editor:

National Nurses Week is celebrated May 6 to 12. The 2016 theme is “Culture of Safety: It Starts with You.” Every day, nurses step forward, embracing new technologies, educating and delivering care, all with a focus on safety and collaboration.

As a nurse for 45 years, I have been amazed and humbled by the acts of kindness and caring that I have witnessed coming from nurses – at work and in my personal life. I see lives affected every day, and I have been affected as well.

Nurses are truly special people as they provide care in many settings including hospitals, clinics, schools, homes, hospice, long-term care and community health.

Please join me in saluting the outstanding nursing professionals in our community who have an unwavering commitment to providing safe, quality, compassionate care.

To all these nurses – thank you for the impact you make as a nurse in our community.

Donna Vandehaar RN, MBA
Chief Operating Officer
Dallas County Hospital, Perry
