If you believe you cannot afford to heat your home this winter, please consider applying for the LIHEAP program.

LIHEAP (Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program) is intended to help both renters and homeowners who are within certain income guidelines.

LIHEAP pays a portion of your residential heating bill for the winter season. The program is not designed to pay for your entire energy bill, but it can help a lot. The program does not pay to heat businesses, including garages, shops or barns.

To apply here in Dallas County, you must phone ahead for an appointment with New Opportunities at 515-465-5185. Your application appointment may be at the New Opportunities office at 1212 Second St. in Perry, or you can request an appointment at a satellite location in Waukee or Adel.

Plan to take the following documents to your appointment:

  • a photo ID for yourself
  • a form of identification for each person in your household
  • copies of recent heating and electric bills
  • proof of income for the past three months for everyone in your household ages 19 and over, such as paycheck stubs, SSI, VA, unemployment, pensions and similar

The assistance you receive from LIHEAP will appear as a credit on your utility bill.
