Perry Lions Club stalwart and local philanthropist Louis Hoger was presented with the Melvin Jones Fellowship Saturday during the Iowa Lions Club District 9 SW meeting at the Hotel Pattee.
The Melvin Jones Fellowship is the highest award bestowed by the Lions Club International Foundation. The award is named after the founder in 1917 of the Lions Club International.
Hoger joined the Perry Lions in 2013 after enjoying membership in the Manson Lions Club from 1998 to 2002. He served as the Perry Lions’ vice president from 2012 to 2016, president in 2016 and treasurer since 2017.
A retired Lutheran minister and leader of the Perry Ministerial Association, Hoger works as the site coordinator for the Perry Area Emergency Food Pantry and served seven years as the Senior Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP) counselor for Dallas County.
“Lou has spent many hours in working with the citizens of Perry in many Lions Club projects,” said District 9 SW Gov. Gary Glockhoff. “The Perry Lions and the District 9SW Lions are proud of your service.”
Perry Mayor Dirk Cavanaugh delivered a welcome to some 60 Lions of District 9SW gathered for the two-day meeting. Cavanaugh praised the work of the Perry Lions, particularly noting the patriotic ardor of the Flags over Perry Project.
